Texas Christian University, or TCU for short, is a private, coeducational university located in Fort Worth, which is the seat of Tarrant County, situated in the US state of Texas, also streching into Parker, Denton, and Wise counties, having a population estimated at a number of more than 727 000 inhabitants, during the 2010 census, fact which makes it the 17th largest city in USA and the 5th largest city in the state.
TCU was founded in 1873, as the AddRan Male & Female College, by East Texas brothers Addison & Randolph Clark, along with their father Joseph A. Clark, the college being named after the first son of Addison, who died of diphtheria at the age of three. That name is now preserved in TCU's AddRan College of Liberal Arts, to memorialize the the university's connection with its founders.
The institution adopted its current name in 1902, almost immediately becoming known as simply TCU, name by which the university is most popularly referred to, today. The unversity is currently classified as a Tier 1 institution by U.S. News and World Report and it has an enrollment of approximately 8800 students, of which 7,600 are undergraduates, to which TCU offers numerous educational programs in various fields of study, including 12 doctoral programs, 54 master's programs and over 100 undergraduate majors.
Athletics
TCU's athletic teams are known as the TCU Horned Frogs, who compete in NCAA Division I Mountain West Conference, in various men's and women's sports, including in volleyball, basketball, golf, soccer and tennis, including in football, in which the teams won two national championships, in '35 and '38, also capturing 14 conference championships, producing notable football players such as Sammy Baugh, Davey O'Brien, Jim Swink and Bob Lilly, as well.
